There are two PhD positions available for applications at the University of Copenhagen. The university is a prestigious public research institution located in Copenhagen, Denmark. Information about the PhD Positions at The University of Copenhagen

As far as the University of Copenhagen is concerned, it is the second-oldest university in Scandinavia after Uppsala University. The Copenhagen Center for Social Data Science, Faculty of Social Sciences (at the University of Copenhagen) invites applications for two PhD positions (100%, 36 months).

The PhD positions are funded by the Pioneer Center for Artificial Intelligence (P1). These positions will be hosted at SODAS but will be affiliated with P1. Besides, one of these two positions will be affiliated with DTU Compute whereas the other one will be affiliated with the IT University of Copenhagen.

The chosen candidate will work on modeling life-trajectory and network data in registry data and probing the resulting embeddings to understand biases. The work of the candidate will be in close collaboration with the Bias Explained project and the Nation-scale Social Networks project.

Commencement Date of the University of Copenhagen PhD (PhD Positions)

The application period is open and will last till 14th July 2024. Interested applicants need to apply by the deadline. The positions will be available from 1st October 2024, but there is an option for later starting date possibility.

Responsibilities for the PhD Positions at The University of Copenhagen

One of the chosen candidates will work closely with the research project Nation Scale Social Networks which investigates representations of social behavior and how predictive such representations are for life outcomes (such as income wealth rank, education level, and unemployment history) based on registry data at Statistics Denmark.

The other chosen candidate will work closely with the research project Bias Explained which makes focuses on quantifying bias in algorithms and indicators and generates models to enhance fairness in different contexts.

Remember, candidates can but do not have to specify if they have a preference to work closely with Bias Explained projects or Nation Scale Social Networks. 

Eligibility Criteria for the PhD Positions at The University of Copenhagen

To be eligible for application, the applicants should meet the eligibility criteria. If interested you need to have an M.Sc. degree or its equivalent. Let’s check out other eligibility standards.

  • You need to have a background within applied mathematics, computer science, social data science, physics, or related fields.
  • You must possess experience with machine learning including deep learning, and/or with complex networks.
  • It will be an advantage to have experience with studying fairness and algorithmic bias.
  • It will also be an advantage to possess experience with modeling graph neural networks or complex networks.
  • Candidates’ experience using transformers will be an advantage.
  • It will be considered an advantage if you have experience working with natural language processing.
  • Your experience with quantifying and modeling networks inequalities will also be an advantage.
  • If you have experience analyzing event sequences, it will be an advantage.
  • Your experience in time-series analysis will be an advantage.
  • Candidates’ experience with data visualization will be considered an advantage.
  • If you have an active interest in interdisciplinary work and strong collaborations, it will be a plus.
  • Your active interest in communicating science will be a plus.

Terms of Employment for PhD Positions

To be conferred a PhD scholarship, the selected candidates will have to enroll as PhD students at the Faculty of Social Sciences, cf. the rules of the Danish Ministerial order No 1039 of 27 August 2013. The candidates will most likely be enrolled in the PhD program at the Center for Social Data Science, University of Copenhagen. As far as their salary is concerned, the exact salary will depend on different aspects including the selected pension scheme and taxation, but it could be expected to be approximately DKK 21,000 net/month.
